Chapter 15

The Array, August 21, 2025, day 1, timeline 1

1:20 p.m.

“Ha ha. I told you it was too late. Now my work is done,” the voice said.

Quinn inspected the navigation holo, which showed tier one was moving quickly out toward deep space. With the decoupling, internal spinning halted. Only exotic matter provided partial gravity and inertial dampening.

Sensors flickered different colors, sirens wailed, and all objects not tied down shifted to the left corner of the room where Quinn worked. Moments later, comms flickered back on.

Quinn attempted to hail Gary and Jeremy in the other array tiers. He used alternate communications, which still failed. He repeated the process with the station chiefs in various sections of tier two and three. Nothing.

“This is Quinn Black. Can anyone hear me?” Quinn said over tier-one comms.

“This is chief Juan Morales of section eleven. I hear you loud and clear. Readouts from my terminal show a complete blackout from the rest of the array, but I’m able to access all channels within tier one except for comms beyond section twelve,” he said in a watered-down South African accent.

“It’s good to hear someone else’s voice.”

“Likewise, Mr. Black.”

“I’m going to need your help restoring the magnetic coils to the outer ring portion. But to do that, we’ll need to reinitialize the micro vents to siphon off some residual antimatter,” Quinn said.

“I’ve got seven crew members between sections eleven and thirteen. We’ll need to climb into the outer shaft and manually reconnect the port couplings to the magnetic coils. The problem is that emergency systems are blocking reconnection. So we’ll have to find a way to override them manually, which won’t be easy to do,” Juan said.

Quinn reflected on array schematics, which he’d designed. He remembered from initial planning he’d put in several alternating barriers within each ring, all of which could be magnetized.

“Give me a couple of minutes. We might not have to do that if I can send a signal by rerouting some of the backup connectors. I just don’t know if our little visitor is still with us. Go ahead and set up your team, but I don’t want to send them in there just yet. In the meantime, see if you can contact the remaining tier chiefs and begin a coordinated response to Earth to let them know what’s going on. My readouts are limited. I think it might have something to do with the interference we’ve been having from the ‘messenger,’ or so we’re calling it,” Quinn said.

Quinn punched the seven-digit code to access the backup computer panels. He navigated the surface-level code to see if he could maneuver some of the navigation systems into the emergency throttles, which might provide what they needed.

A siren sounded, indicating a malfunction in one of the release valves. Several pipes provided emergency relief pressure from various flow interchanges that could mechanically activate certain transfer functions of the array, which included everything from electron flow and magnetic coils to static pressure and atmospheric conversion.

“Standing by to execute manual override,” Juan said over the comms.
